Description

Most red plants demand very high light and tight nutrient control before they show any colour. Ludwigia Super Red is the exception – it comes up red under moderate light and stays red, which makes it the sensible choice for a first splash of colour in a scape.

Planted as a group of six or more against green stem plants, the contrast does a lot of work for very little effort.

Planting notes

• Plant stems individually, 3 cm apart.
• Lower leaves drop if the group is too dense and light cannot reach them – thin it out periodically.
• Iron-rich fertiliser deepens the red. Nitrate that is too high pushes it back towards green.
• Trim the top and replant cuttings; the base sends out side shoots.
