Description

Guppies are the fish most Indian aquarists start with, and for good reason: they are tolerant of hard alkaline tap water, they eat anything, and they breed without any intervention from you. These are line-bred strains from our own Chennai breeding facility, so colour and tail shape are consistent rather than the mixed-genetics fish sold by weight in local markets.

Each pair is one male and one female. Females arrive already gravid more often than not, so expect fry within a few weeks.

Keeping notes

• Guppies thrive in Chennai tap water. Do not chase soft, acidic parameters – they prefer hard water.
• Keep a ratio of two or three females per male in larger groups to spread out male attention.
• Fry are eaten by adults. Add dense floating plants such as hornwort or a breeding box if you want to raise them.
• Avoid fin nippers such as tiger barbs, which will shred long guppy tails.
