Description

Bio-rings are sintered ceramic with a porous internal structure that gives an enormous surface area for nitrifying bacteria to colonise. Those bacteria are what convert toxic ammonia to nitrite and then to relatively harmless nitrate. Mechanical media catches dirt; biological media is what actually keeps fish alive.

Roughly 500 g of rings supports a moderately stocked 100 litre tank. More is better as long as water flows through it rather than around it.

Usage notes

• Place after mechanical media in the flow path, so debris is removed before the rings.
• Rinse only in tank water or dechlorinated water. Tap water chlorine kills the colony.
• Do not replace all the media at once. Swap out no more than a third at a time.
• Bio-rings do not wear out. They only need replacing if physically broken down.
