Description

A canister filter puts all the media outside the tank, which means far more biological capacity than a hang-on-back and nothing visible inside the aquarium except the intake and outflow. For any tank over about 100 litres, or any tank with messy fish, this is the right category of filter.

Four stacked media baskets let you run coarse sponge, fine wool, bio-rings and carbon in sequence. The integrated priming pump saves the usual business of siphoning to start the flow.

Setup notes

• The canister must sit below the water line for the siphon to work – inside a cabinet or on the floor.
• 1000 l/h suits tanks from 100 to 250 litres. On a smaller tank, fit the spray bar to diffuse the flow.
• Rinse new media in dechlorinated water. Never wash biological media in tap water; chlorine kills the bacteria colony.
• Clean mechanical media monthly, biological media only when flow drops noticeably.
