Description

Building your own terrarium is genuinely satisfying and hard to get wrong once the layers are right. This kit supplies everything except the planting, so you can pick species that suit your light and your taste – or come to us for a recommendation.

In the box

• Sealed glass dome vessel, 25 cm, with lid
• Drainage layer – 1 kg washed leca
• Activated carbon layer, 250 g, which is what keeps a sealed system from going sour
• Sterilised terrarium substrate blend, 2 kg
• Sheet moss and a piece of hardscape wood
• Long tweezers, mini spade and a spray mister
• Illustrated build guide with layer depths

The build, in short

1. Leca 2 cm deep for drainage.
2. Activated carbon spread thin across the leca.
3. Substrate 4 – 5 cm, sloped higher at the back.
4. Hardscape first, planting second, moss last to cover bare soil.
5. Mist until the substrate is damp but not wet, then seal.

Not included

Plants. Fittonia, peperomia, ferns, pilea and tropical mosses all work well – all available from us. Do not use succulents or cacti in a sealed vessel; they rot within weeks.
