Description

White spot (ich) presents as grains of salt scattered over the body and fins, usually after a temperature swing or the stress of a new arrival. Untreated it will take out a whole tank. This is a standard malachite green and formalin combination, effective against ich, fungal infections and mild fin rot.

Treatment protocol

• Remove activated carbon from the filter first – it will strip the medication out.
• Dose 1 ml per 20 litres daily for five consecutive days.
• Raise the temperature to 28 °C to speed up the parasite life cycle. Ich can only be killed in its free-swimming stage.
• Increase aeration – warmer water holds less oxygen and the medication adds stress.
• Do a 30% water change on day six, then run carbon to remove residues.

Do not use with

• Shrimp, snails or any invertebrate – malachite green is lethal to them
• Scaleless fish such as loaches and some catfish – use half dose and observe closely
• Marine invertebrate systems
