Description

Neon tetras are the fish that turned a generation of hobbyists into aquarists. Kept in a group of ten or more against a dark substrate and green foliage, the iridescent blue line down the flank behaves like a strip of neon under aquarium lighting.

Our neons are farm bred in Kolkata and held in our Chennai quarantine system for a minimum of 10 days before they are offered for sale. They are treated prophylactically for flukes and fed a varied diet of micro pellets and live baby brine shrimp, so they arrive with full colour and good body weight rather than the thin, faded fish typical of freshly imported stock.

Keeping notes

• Keep in groups of 10 or more. Small groups hide constantly and lose colour.
• Neons prefer soft, slightly acidic water. Chennai tap water is usually harder than ideal, so a small amount of RO or rainwater in the change water helps.
• Perfect tank mates: rasboras, corydoras, otocinclus, amano shrimp and dwarf gouramis.
• Avoid angelfish and larger cichlids, which treat adult neons as food.
