Description

A closed terrarium is a complete water cycle behind glass. Moisture evaporates from the substrate, condenses on the inside of the vessel, runs back down and waters the plants again. Seal it properly and it needs opening perhaps twice a year.

Each one is built by hand: a drainage layer, activated carbon, a sterilised substrate blend, hardscape, and a planting of tropical species chosen to stay small and tolerate high humidity. Mosses, ferns, fittonia, peperomia and pilea, depending on what is looking best in the nursery that week.

Care

• Light. Bright indirect light. Never direct sun – a sealed vessel in sunlight cooks in an afternoon.
• Water. Open it only when the glass stops fogging entirely. Then a light mist, and reseal.
• Too much condensation? Leave the lid off for a few hours. That is the only adjustment it ever needs.
• Trimming. Once or twice a year, snip anything pressing against the glass.
• No fertiliser. The system recycles its own nutrients. Feeding it causes rot.
